The pride of Australia’s fledgling durian industry, Tropical Primary Product’s fresh HEW1 durians is an homage to the Malaysian durian kampung. 

Dubbed the "Kangaroo King", the HEW1 thrives in Darwin's subtropical climate as a big sized durian, averaging between 1.5-4 kg. Its flesh is a rich turmeric yellow colour. Its fresh, undoubtedly pungent aroma compliments the HEW1’s firm yet creamy, mild bittersweet delicious flesh.

The HEW1 budwood were propagated in Malaysia mostly from durian kampung variety, then cultivated and grafted on to local durian trees in Darwin.

This is the durian that gave The Thorny Fruit Co its humble beginnings.

The Thorny Fruit Co might be the only place you can specifically purchase HEW1 durians this year in Sydney, without being mixed up with other varieties.

In previous years, a popular Sydney suburb Asian grocers, the HEW1 were sold among a mix of cheaper kampung and imported frozen-then-thawed durians. There is no marketing or labelling by variety in those shops.

HOW TO KNOW YOUR FRESH DURIAN IS READY TO OPEN AND EAT?
Fresh durians should have to have a strong scent for you to know when they are ready fully ripened to be opened. If it is difficult to open, it is not ready. If they peel apart "easily" at the natural segment lines, then they are usually ready.

If you open them too early, it is your responsibility to accept that there may be crunchy parts of the durian. No refunds for crunchy Australian durians will be made. We do not refund based on taste preference either.
