Turmeric or botanical name Curcuma. The Thorny Fruit Co has sourced two varieties of fresh turmeric rhizomes from a biodynamic farm located in Far North Queensland region.
About Yellow Turmeric (Curcuma Longa)
Known as the more common cooking turmeric, Curcuma Longa is an orange-yellow rhizome belonging to the ginger family.
Its medicinal potentials stems from its bioactive constituent, curcumin. Turmeric has been regarded for centuries by many cultures to be an effective remedy for the management of many diseases, such as cancer, inflammations, microbial infections, diabetes, arthritic, muscular disorders, biliary disorders, anorexia, cough, diabetic wounds, hepatic disorders, and sinusitis.
In Indonesia, Malaysia and India, turmeric is used widely in cooking as a base spice in curries, gravies, soups, stews and rice.
Fresh turmeric is so great to make jamu, teas, juices, pickles and marinades.
About White Turmeric (Curcuma zeodaria)
White Turmeric is a paler yellow-white edible rhizome with a similar flavour profile to ginger, but with a bitter aftertaste.
It is commonly used in Indonesian jamu, and made into healing balms, salads or pickled in India - in its country of origin.
Much rarer than the common curcuma longa, the curcuma zeodaria has been used in Ayurvedic remedies to help the digestive and respiratory system.
What is biodynamic?
According to the Australian Certified Organic website, “Biodynamic farming is an enhanced or alternative method of organic farming. Biodynamic uses traditional farming techniques and a prescribed list of biological or natural “preparations”, whilst acknowledging and working with universal or cosmic forces that are at play in the farming environment.
Biodynamic farming is regulated under the same standard in Australia as organic.“
